Thigh muscle pain is usually caused by a wide range of factors; causes like inflammatory diseases, muscle strain, thigh muscle injury and a pulled hamstrings are the most common ones which can lead to more than muscle pain and discomfort.

When your thigh muscles are in pain, you tend to reduce your movement of the affected part; your activities are affected as well as your mobility. Pain may not just be concentrated on the thighs but can radiate to other areas of the lower extremities like the lower back, the hips, the legs and the knees.

When thigh muscle pain is not treated, it can progress to various complications that can add more limitations to movement.

The thigh muscles are a complex team of three muscle types: the quadriceps muscles located at the front of the thighs, the abductor muscles that are found towards the inside and the hamstring muscles located at the back. All of these three muscles work in harmony as you flex and extend your leg to move, walk, run, sprint, jump, leap and muchmore.

Activities that strain or tear the thigh muscles can ultimately lead to thigh muscle injury and muscle leg pain. Here are other possible causes of leg pain and the corresponding treatment for each:

  • Strain on the muscles of the thighs – athletes are the most prone to develop strains of the thigh muscle group to as serious as a pulled hamstring. Over exercising can also lead to strains and this is why most athletes and physical trainers start with warm up exercises to condition muscle groups first.

Cold therapy is often the initial treatment for thigh muscle pain; cold compresses may be applied directly on the site to reduce pain and the injured part must be elevated to reduce swelling. You can gradually return to your usual activities with the use of thigh strengthening exercises as soon as you can manage to move the affected part.

  • Degenerative diseases – osteoarthritis or arthritis can affect the bones and the joints which can lead to chronic aching pain from the muscles of the thighs to the tendons. Pain can often spread to nearby areas that can significantly affect movement like calf muscle pain, groin muscle pain, knee pain and of course lower back pain.

Treatments often include medical intervention and medication. Rest, moderate exercises, changes in diet and relaxation techniques can reduce pain and develop movement.

  • Sciatica – sharp pain which starts from deep in the leg may be due to the inflammation of the sciatic nerve. This nerve is essential in sending information from the brain to the muscles of the leg and vice versa; with the inflammation of this nerve, there is shooting and tingling thigh muscle pain on the leg followed by weakness of the affected part.

Sciatica must be assessed immediately by a medical specialist. Medical treatment includes medication and physical therapy; disregarding the pain may lead to muscle degeneration and immobility.
